Goodbye York / Hello Oxford - Day 5

We mostly just travelled today.

NCH had some work to do before we left York. So we left later.

Heavy traffic all the way to Oxford. It took about 4 hours to drive. Lots & lots of wind turbines.

The hedges are really high too, so you don't see much of the countryside.

But we finally made it to our lovely Airbnb.

Used the cute little kitchen to make some dinner.

I did use the time in the car, when I wasn't driving..........

Tah Dah!

I am making a möbius using my hand dyed & spun yarn.  It is all a single ply, so to knit it I am having to unwind it a bit as I go. It makes the whole process take longer.

I do this so the end result isn't too stiff.

In fact the piece is beautiful & soft. But, it can only be hand washed as it will felt & shrink in the washing machine.

I used food colouring & 19 micron merino to make the yarn.

Here another picture.

I'll post more as I progress.

We are exploring Oxford tomorrow.

York - Day 4

Today was fairly laid back.

We went to the National Birds of Prey Centre at Hemsley.

IMG_0928.JPG

They have 3 falconry sessions a day showing all sorts of eagles, falcons, buzzards & owls. It was fantastic.

The birds that are part of the falconry sessions are tethered like the one above.

They can fly around 8 months of the year. The ones in the aviaries are either moulting or breeding.

The whole thing opened nn 2013.

Here are some more photos.

This little bird is a Burrowing Owl. We found out they live in communities like Meercats. There was a demo of how they use the ground.

I reckon I would love this job.

Cleaning out the aviaries of course is a different story.

This guy started the centre. He is so enthusiastic about conservation & the beauty of these birds.

A great day out if you are in the area.

We went back to York.

I went & did a bit of shopping & NCH did a bit of walking the walls of York.

Here are some of his photos.

Then we discovered York Minster.

This is Clifford's Tower across the road from our hotel. It used to be part of the old city walls.  Built by William the Conqueror I think.

Having trouble staying awake - 7pm UK time, 4am Sydney time. After a 25 hour journey, I feel like I have been hit by a truck.

We are off to the Viking Centre tomorrow after breakfast.

Yay!
