My re-use project has been to lengthen a favourite denim skirt using a cotton poncho I made using a piece of hand dyed sheeting + plus my husbands old torn jeans.
See photos below.
I hate it when a skirt is too short & you need to keep pulling it down when you sit down.
So, I resolved to make it longer.
WARNING - I hand sew everything.
Here is how I did it..................…
Re-purposed denim skirt & inverted fringe by Narda Campbell
What I used:
Denim skirt
Leg of my husband’s old torn jeans
100% cotton thread - Gutterman CA02776
100% cotton sheeting from previously made poncho.
Dylon Permanent Fabric Dye - Navy
How I did it:
Step 1
Dye the skirt (according to the directions) to be the roughly the same colour as the fringe
( I like to make the fabric look mottled - not a fan of consistent colour.)
Step 2
Take the jeans & cut off a leg.
Using this, cut a piece that is the width of the extension to make the skirt longer. I used 10cm (4in).
Step 3
Cut a piece off the poncho, allowing enough to cover both sides of the denim extension & enough for the fringe to extend up the skirt. See photo below.
I used approx 30cm or 10in above the fringe so there is enough to cover both the front & the back of the addition.
Also allow for a couple of cms at the end so you can tuck & stitch the ends in.
Step 4
Using running stitch, attach the fabric to the denim piece.
Start in the centre front - this will make the finished product more even.
This photo shows the centre back - I added a ‘kick split’ otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to walk in the skirt.
Step 5
Stitch the denim extension to the inside of the skirt - making sure that the fringe is on the right side. (outside of the skirt)
I used back stitch.
(I stitched it in the wrong way round the first time - RATS!)

I cut the lengths of fabric into random lengths as I stitched them. I’m not a big fan of uniformity.
Here is the finished product.
It is very comfy to wear - & I no longer spend a lot of time pulling the darn thing down.
I love wearing this skirt.
